Teach Your Child About Eid ul Adha

Muslims have been blessed with two big celebrations during the year. The first is Eid ul Fitr, which is the celebration to commemorate the end of the struggle of Ramadan. The second is Eid ul Adha, which is the celebration to commemorate the end of the struggle of Hajj.

Eid ul Adha occurs in the month of Dhul Hijjah on the 10th day in the 12th month of the Islamic Calendar. The Eid depends on the legitimate sighting of the moon at the beginning of the month of Dhul Hijjah and the completion of the annual Holy Pilgrimage of Hajj.

If you want to learn about the month of Dhul Hijjah, read Teach Your Kids About Dhul Hijjah. Depending on where you live, the celebration of Eid can vary from one to two days.

What is the Qurbani?

The sacrifice of the qurbani is carried out after the Eid Salah in congregation on the morning of Eid at your local gathering. The qurbani is the slaughtering of an animal as a sacrifice in remembrance of Prophet Ibrahim’s sacrifice for Allah SWT. This is also known as udhiya and can be performed from the 10th to the 12th of Dhu-al-Hijjah if you have the means to do so.

The sacrificial animal must be a sheep, lamb, goat, cow, bull, or even a camel. The animal must be in good health, over a certain age, and sacrificed with the utmost mercy to be slaughtered in a halal and Islamic way.

The meat from the qurbani is divided into three equal portions, with one-third for you and your family, one-third for friends, and one-third donated to those in need.

The days of Eid ul Adha are spent celebrating with family and friends, where we wear our best attire and share gifts and meals together.
