Teach Your Child About Dhul Hijjah

The month of Dhul Hijjah is the 12th month in the Islamic calendar and marks the end of the Islamic year. It is followed by the month of Muharram, and thus the new Islamic year begins.

The first ten days of Dhul Hijjah are very blessed days for Muslims. During these days, are the sacred days of the Hajj and the celebration of Eid ul Adha. Not only this, but the nights of these days are very special too, because Allah SWT swears by them in the Quran:

“By the Dawn, and the Ten Nights…” (Quran Al-Fajr 89.1-2)

So what Should We Teach Our Kids About These Blessed Days Of Dhul Hijjah?

1. The importance of fasting during the first days

It is recommended for a Muslim to fast during the first 9 days of Dhul Hijjah and to celebrate the day of Eid on the 10th day. Of these blessed 9 days, it is particularly recommended to fast on the Day of 'Arafah, which is the 9th of Dhul Hijjah.

“The Prophet PBUH did not leave four matters: Fasting `Ashura (10th of Muharram), the ten days (of Dhul Hijjah), and three days of each month.” (Ahmad)

2. The importance of increasing our spirituality during the days

It is recommended for a Muslim to keep busy in these first 10 days of Dhul Hijjah with acts of worship because these are the best of days. We should perform acts such as:

  • To remember Allah through dhikr.

  • To fast for the sake of Allah.

  • To give charity for the sake of Allah.

  • To repent and ask Allah for forgiveness.

  • To perform good deeds and righteous actions for the sake of Allah.

3. The importance of spending the nights of these days in prayer and worship

It is especially recommended to spend some part of each of the nights of the ten days of Dhul Hijjah in prayer and worship.

The Prophet PBUH said, “There are no days in which good works are more beloved to Allah than these days – meaning the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah.” (Bukhari)
