Teach Your Child About the Day of Ashura

The month of Muharram is the first month in the Hijri calendar. It is a month that the Prophet PBUH prompted us to fast a lot after the month of Ramadan. A very special and great day in Muharram is the 10th day, which is known as the Day of ‘Ashura. The word ‘Ashura’ in Arabic signifies the 10th day.

On the Day of Ashura Many Historical Events Occurred

  • Prophet Adam A.S was absolved of his error.

  • Prophet Nuh A.S was saved from the flood.

  • The people of Prophet Yunus A.S were forgiven.

  • Prophet Musa and the Bani Israel were saved from the Pharaoh.

  • The covering of the Ka‘bah (kiswah) was changed on ‘Ashura.

Acts to Perform on the Day of Ashura

To Fast

The Prophet PBUH advised us to fast more in the month of Muharram after the month of Ramadan. He especially recommended that we fast on the Day of ‘Ashura because it is such a blessed day. Towards the end of his life, the Prophet PBUH clarified that when we fast on the 10th day, we should also fast another day with it. He SAW said:

“If I remain (alive) till the following year, I will most certainly fast the ninth (alongside the 10th al-Muharram) -Muslim

To fast on the Day of ‘Ashura also wipes out our sins from the previous year. The Prophet PBUH was asked about fasting on the day of ‘Ashura and said:

“It expiates the past year.” - Muslim

To Perform the Night Prayer

It is a good idea to perform the night prayer (tahajjud) during the month of Muharram and on ‘Ashura as this is a blessed time. Tahajjud is the best time for voluntary prayer and the closest a servant gets to his Lord. It is a time when the doors of the skies are opened, supplications are answered, and needs are fulfilled. Allah SWT Says:

“Who forsake their beds to cry unto their Lord in fear and hope, and spend of that We have bestowed on them. No soul knows what is kept hid for them of joy, as a reward for what they used to do.” - Qur`an, 32.16-17

The Prophet PBUH said:

“Stick to night prayer, for it was the way of the righteous before you. Night prayer is a means of closeness to Allah Most High, of expiating for bad deeds, avoiding sins, and keeping away illness from one’s body.” - Tirmidhi 3543

To Give Charity

Giving charity on ‘Ashura’ is recommended as well and is equal to an entire year’s worth of charity. On the authority of ’Abdullah bin ’Amr bin al-’As R.A who said:

“Whoever fasts ‘Ashura’ it is as if he has fasted the entire year. And whoever gives charity this day it is like the charity of an entire year”. - Ibn Rajab’s Lata’if al-Ma‘arif

To Repent

In Muharram, and especially the Day of ‘Ashura it is wonderful opportunity to gain forgiveness, because the Prophet PBUH said:

“If you will fast after the month of Ramadan, then fast al-Muharram, for indeed it is Allah’s month in which there is a day that Allah accepted the repentance of a people, and in which He accepts the repentance of other people.” - Tirmidhi

To Be Generous

We are urged to be generous to our family on ‘Ashura because the Messenger of Allah SAW said:

“One who generously spends on his family on the day of ‘Ashura’, Allah will be generous on him for the entire year.” - Baihaqi
