This account portrays a crucial chapter in the life of the Prophet, highlighting his unwavering commitment to spreading the message of Islam despite encountering hardships and rejection.
The Context
In the early years of Islam, the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) faced immense opposition from the people of Mecca, who vehemently rejected his message and subjected the Muslim community to severe persecution. Seeking to find support and propagate Islam, the Prophet turned his attention to the city of Taif, located in present-day Saudi Arabia.
The Journey to Taif
Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) embarked on a journey to Taif, hoping to find a receptive audience among its inhabitants. He approached the city's prominent figures, including its leaders and influential individuals, to convey the message of Islam and seek their support. However, instead of a warm reception, he was met with disdain and hostility.
The Rejection and Suffering
The people of Taif not only rejected the Prophet's (pbuh) message but also subjected him to extreme humiliation and physical abuse. As he endured their rejection and mistreatment, the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) remained steadfast in his mission, relying on Allah's guidance and mercy.
Spiritual Significance
Amidst his suffering and disappointment, the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) sought solace in prayer, beseeching Allah for support and guidance. Responding to his plea, Allah sent Angel Jibril (Gabriel) to offer assistance. Jibril informed the Prophet that, if he wished, Allah would destroy the people of Taif for their insolence. However, the Prophet, known for his mercy and compassion, chose forgiveness and prayed for the people's guidance instead.

This hadith below showcases the Prophet Muhammad's (pbuh) supplication to Allah SWT during his time of distress and difficulty in Taif. Despite facing rejection and hardship, the Prophet turned to Allah, seeking His guidance, mercy, and protection. The supplication reflects the Prophet's trust in Allah's plan and his determination to continue spreading the message of Islam despite the challenges he faced. The Prophet (pbuh) set out towards Taif and said,
“Allahumma I complain to You of my weakness, my scarcity of resources, and the humiliation I have been subjected to by the people. O Most Merciful of those who are merciful. O Lord of the weak and my Lord too. To whom have you entrusted me? To a distant person who receives me with hostility? Or to an enemy to whom you have granted authority over my affair? So long as You are not angry with me, I do not care. Your favor is of a more expansive relief to me. I seek refuge in the light of Your face by which all darkness is dispelled and every affair of this world and the next is set right, lest Your anger or Your displeasure descends upon me. I desire Your pleasure and satisfaction until You are pleased. There is no power and no might except by You.'"
The Prophet’s (pbuh) was so heartffelt that Jibrail (AS) appeared before him, greeting him with assalamu'alaikum and said;
“Allah knows all that has passed between you and these people. He has deputed an angel in charge of the mountains to be at your command.”
Saying this, Jibrail (AS) ushered the angel before the Prophet ﷺ. The angel greeted him and said;
“O, Prophet of Allah! I am at your service. If you wish, I can cause the mountains overlooking this town on both sides to collide with each other, so that all the people therein would be crushed to death, or you may suggest any other punishment for them.”
Muhammad ﷺ said;
“Even if these people do not accept Islam, I do hope from Allah that there will be persons from among their progeny who would worship Allah and serve His cause.”(Sahih Bukhari, Book 60, Hadith 214)
